Traffic Rules & Road Safety Regulations in India

Essential driving regulations under the Motor Vehicles (Driving) Regulations 2017 & latest 2026 penalty fines.

Fundamental Rules of the Road

Rule 1

Keep Left & Overtake on the Right

Always drive on the left side of two-way roads. Overtaking must strictly be done from the right side of the vehicle ahead after giving a proper right-turn indicator signal. Overtaking from the left is illegal unless the vehicle in front is turning right.

Rule 2

Right of Way at Roundabouts & Intersections

Traffic already circulating inside a roundabout has priority right-of-way over vehicles entering. At uncontrolled crossroads without signals, yield to vehicles approaching from your right hand side.

Rule 3

Unconditional Emergency Vehicle Priority

All drivers must immediately pull over to the left and provide a clear passage to Ambulances, Fire Brigade, and Police emergency response vehicles. Obstructing emergency vehicles attracts a heavy ₹10,000 fine.

Rule 4

Pedestrian Priority at Zebra Crossings

Pedestrians have absolute right-of-way at uncontrolled marked pedestrian (Zebra) crossings. Drivers must slow down when approaching a crossing and bring the vehicle to a complete stop if someone is crossing.
